Movie Review - "Shoot 'Em Up!"

So here's a first for the reckless philosophers and for me in general. A movie review.

"Shoot 'Em Up" released in 2007 stars Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen and the fantastically hot Monica Belluci. The movie starts with Owen's character "Smith" sitting eating a carrot on a bench while a pregnant woman runs by. She's being pursued by a guy trying to kill her. Smith can't stand for this and intervenes killing the guy with a well placed carrot. Yes, I said carrot. What ensues is a wild shoot out scene where he shoots a guy for having a pony tail, delivers a baby, kills lots of guys and severs an umbilical cord with a bullet. I made none of this up.

From that crazy opening the movie rarely if ever lets up with a barrage of cool, over the top gunfights silly one liners and lots of carrots. He enlists Monica Belluci's character, a lactating prostitute, to help care for the baby he is eminently ill equipped to deal with. Paul Giamatti is the guy running the thugs that Smith knocks off easily and his performance as a dirty, nasty, viscous, villain thats regularly browbeaten by his wife is great. Giamatti and Owen are easily Oscar material and this movie is definitely slumming for them. But they look like they enjoy every minute of it.

There's a conspiracy about gun control that is really just a simple plot device to give the movie structure. It can be safely ignored if you just enjoy the gun fights. At one point Smith and the prostitute are having sex, when gun men break in and without missing a beat or stopping the sex he kills something like 7 guys and delivers the line, "Talk about shooting your load.".

How can you not love this movie?

So while this movie will horrify the mainstream, the rest of us who can appreciate what the director was trying to accomplish will enjoy the hell out of it. It ranks with classics like "Crank" and "The Transporter", both movies that take the farce of action movie to the limit, and then gleefully jump across it and keep going.

It's no high drama or Oscar material but it is great fun. Check it out.

Dude, that sounds awesome. I'll have to check it out of your Blockbuster collection. That reminds me, I think I still have your Spiderman 3. I hope you don't charge late fees.
