EEEPC First impressions.

Welp, after having a few days with the EEE I have to say its a pretty nice piece of equipment.

The first thing I noticed was how incredibly small it is. The reviews that state its about the size of 2 DVD cases stacked weren't blowing smoke. I admit I actually had 2 dvd cases put together so I could get a handle on the size before I even bought it so I knew what to expect.

The reality though of having a full laptop computer that size is another thing altogether. It's amazing sometimes realizing how small they can make things.

The EEE has excellent build quality. The hinge is nice and sturdy, and the whole things feels, well, un-cheap. Expensive even. Everyone who has seen it is amazed by its size. Of course the people who have seen it are torn between lusting after it for its compactness and lightweight (we're all travelers and a 2 pound notebook is so much easier on the shoulders), and being concerned about the tiny keyboard. I found the keyboard to be very easy to use and the small size didn't slow me down at all. I have medium size hands but I have a tiny USB mini keyboard that I am used to and this keyboard actually seems bigger.

The screen size is also something I'm used to. My nav system in the car has a nice 7 inch screen and I find it completely legible and the EEE's screen is higher resolution so no issues there at all. The touch pad suprised me because its appears to be a single button type like a mac. OF course it isn't, if you press the left of the button its a left click and the right click is pressing the right side. It has 3 USB 2.0 ports on it and a SD card slot. The built in solid state HD is 4GB's and surprisingly fast. I've already stuck a 2GB SD card I had laying around in it and it just mounts like any other drive in the Linux system. I may spend the cash on a 16GB SDHC card next week or so but for now it works great as is.

Because I am going to use it for travel I had to evaluate the multimedia capabilities and I must say I was impressed. I streamed 2 large high resolution Xvid files off the SD card. They played full screen, full frame rate no problem. I've hit youtube in the browser, and watched many vids. I listened to a bunch of music and the little speakers on the side of the screen sound surprisingly good. Not great mind you but better than I had anticipated.

The only thing missing from this machine over the Galaxy 4g is the addition of a webcam, and personally I never use them. If I have a need I will use my 5MP MP4 digital camcorder. The space issue I have found an ideal workaround. I use my iAudio M5 20GB mp3 player as an external HD. Since I have purchased my Zune, it has fallen by the wayside a bit and this is a nice re purposing of the equipment. Plus it is smaller than the other external portable USB HD solutions out there. Given its not huge but it works well enough. Since don't need to carry video or music on that drive (since I have the ZUNE) suddenly 20GB is cavernous again. For quick storage, USB thumb drives work well. Even a thumb drive shaped miniSD card reader worked. The only thing that didn't work perfectly was connecting my Olympus 4.1 MP digital camera to it but I'm sure the XD card will be read no problem with a USB reader.

All things considered I am most impressed with this equipment. I'm totally enamored with the form factor, and capability of the machine. Once I get around to installing a flavor of Windows on it I'll post another more comprehensive review.
